Fact Families and more word problems!

We have been working hard in first grade math learning all about fact families.  We learned that fact families have three numbers and create two addition and two subtraction number sentences.  We have also discovered that by knowing one of the addition facts, it is very easy to know the other because they are turn-around facts! We are also beginning to recognize the relationship between addition and subtraction. This aides us in two of the first grade math standards: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction and understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction

Students have learned strategies for solving word problems with three addends! Here are some pictures of students practicing or showing their own ways of solving.  We are also realizing that there is more than one way to solve a problem! We have been focusing on using the 8 Mathematicl Practices in our teaching and learning.  Completing story problems helps us with Mathematical Practice Number 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others and Number 4: Model with mathematics

Here are some screen chomps that demonstrate students' understanding of base ten blocks and place value!
