Math on our Minds - Number line, tallies and Number Stories

This past week in math, we continued to spend some time building the basics. The mathematical routines that we are spending so much time on now will build our math foundation and carry us through the year.

Here is what we worked on this week:

Hopping on the number line:
*1.OA.1 - Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
This is an essential skill and one that is trickier than you might think. We emphasize the word "hopping" because so many students forget to hop to the next number on their first move. Many students count the number they are on at "1". We use this to help with "more" and "less" problems.

Writing and Counting Tallies:
Tallies will be used to help us create groupings, count by 5's and organize our information for graphing and data standards.

Number Stories:
*1.OA.1 - Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
This is a crucial standard that will be continuous throughout the year. Our McDole expectations are the correct answer, unit and evidence of work. The evidence can be comprised of a number story, drawings, tallies or other "prove it" strategies.

This week, we will continue to work on these basics and introduce a few more strategies. We will also be starting Rocket Math this week. More information will come home about this soon.
