Rocket Math!

This week, a large focus of our math time was implementing our math facts program, Rocket Math! This program coincides with the first grade math standard: Add and subtract within 20. Knowing their facts with automaticity will also aid in other mathematical practices such as: Modeling with math and showing a reasonable argument for their answers. The students should be bringing home a folder each day with their rocket that indicates what level they are on, a practice page if they did not pass their goal, and a stapled packet of answer sheets to use at home and in class.  The practice packet MUST come back to school in their folder each day so that they have it for practice time with their partner.

Each day in class, the students will practice their given level for the day with a partner.  They will have a few minutes each to practice their facts out loud, with their partner checking and reinforcing correct answers.

The tests are timed, and the students are given one minute to complete as many math facts on the page as possible.  They all began with a goal of 20 facts within the minute, but if they show that they can complete more than 20, their goal will be raised to be sure to continuously challenge them!
