Skip Counting and Problem of the Day

1st graders at McDole were working hard last week on skip counting! We focused on counting by 2s and 5s. This can be a tricky skill to master so we’ve been practicing in many different ways. We learned songs and movements to help us skip count.

Common Core Standard: 1.NBT.1 Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Counting our eyes by 2! Here is a counting by 2s number line.

How Many Eyes are Here Today?
Check us out. We're counting by 2s!

We also started a routine called problem of the day. Each day, students will have a number story to solve. Students start as math detectives and look for the numbers, the question and the units in the number story. Then they decide if they are using Gus the Plus or Linus the Minus. Lastly, they solve the problem and show their thinking on their white boards.

Common Core Standards:
1.OA.1 Use addition and subtraction within 10 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, equations with a symbol for unknown number to represent the problem.

1.OA.2 Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole umbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
