More Time and Adding/Subtracting with Base Ten Blocks

Our next math assessment will be this Friday.  It will cover the following math standards:

1.NBT.6 Solve 1 and 2 digit addition and subtraction problems using concrete models, drawings, and/or strategies (place value mats, base ten blocks).

1.MD.3  Tell and write time in half-hours using an analog and digital clock.

We will also do some review of telling ten more and ten less.  This skill needs to be mastered mentally, without the use of a number line/grid.  Going from the 90s to 100s can be tricky (i.e. What is 10 more than 98?).

First Graders have been practicing their time telling skills.   We've spent days learning time in many ways. One tricky part is remembering where to draw (place) the hands on the clock, and being sure to draw the hour hand shorter than the minute hand.  Here are some helpful hints.

This is a fun game we played to practice telling time in both analog and digital form.   Students had to read their clues and then the student with the corresponding time had to read their card.

Time Bingo!

We have been using longs and cubes to both add and subtract.

Counting the base ten blocks up and adding them first is helpful, and then we count on by ones if there are any cubes. We then write our answer in number form.

When we practice on our dry-erase boards, we draw the numbers using lines to represent longs and dots to represent cubes.

When we subtract we draw the longs and cubes to show the starting number and then cross out the number we are subtracting.

*Please practice these skills at home in preparation for our next math assessment on Friday.
